Reiki for Athletes
Reiki is a holistic therapy that gently, yet powerfully transmits unlimited healing energy to the athlete. Reiki releases energetic blockages, tension, and toxins from the body and is deeply restorative. It may look allot like a massage but it’s not the same.
Reiki uses energy, which not only affects the muscles; it deeply penetrates every cell of the body by calming the bodies nervous system, allowing it to relax and heal from within. After all, in order for your body to properly heal, it needs to be fully relaxed and at ease.
Reiki is a none invasive therapy, and due to the supportive nature of Reiki, it is a wonderful complement to anything the athlete is already choosing as part of his/her health care and recovery regimen. Rather than targeting symptoms of pain or injury, Reiki addresses the root causes. Once the root cause of the issue is resolved, the body eliminates the effects of the imbalance (injury, tension, pain) and heals the body and mind naturally.
From a scientific point of view, Reiki produces results on an electromagnetic level. From recent research, it appears Reiki acts to electromagnetically ‘jump-start’ the body’s own healing process by producing changes in vibrational frequency that, in turn, stimulate physical changes in the body.
How awesome is that!
How Does Reiki Help the Athlete?
The health benefits of Reiki has become much more recognized every day, and its popularity is growing—due to its successful integration into hundreds of hospitals and operating rooms, wellness centres and spas, throughout North America and around the world, due to people sharing their success stories and also because of recognition in the media, such as being featured on the "The Dr. Oz" show.
Professional athletes in the NFL, NBA, MLB, UFC as well as other sports have used Reiki, with many incorporating Reiki into their sports regime.
On - the-spot Relief
While regular post-injury or game/practice recovery sessions usually take place in a comfortable setting, Reiki can also be used on the field or court for immediate treatment of injuries. Reiki can be used to help minimize swellings and bleeding, relieves headaches and other physical pain immediately, and also helps heal tissues, burns, sprains and wounds. Reiki can reduce the healing time of an injury and makes the healing process more comfortable.
Professional athletes work tirelessly to strive and exceed the expectations of teammates, coaches, fans, themselves and often their harshest critics. There is enormous pressure to win for the team as well as a passionate drive to achieve a new personal best. It is a challenge to maintain mental and emotional resilience during unpredictable cycles of wins, losses, injuries, fatigue and life on and off the playing field.
Reiki can help the athlete develop a sense of physical and mental calm, that helps even the most challenged athlete stay focused and able to work better with others. In the face of an unusually high-stress environment, Reiki supports the individual athlete to maintain the drive needed to win while maintaining his or her serenity at the same time.

Treatment - What to Expect
During a Reiki treatment the client is fully clothed and lied comfortably on a massage table with a pillow or bolster under his/her knees to protect the lower back from any stress, soft Reiki music plays in the background and if intuitively called upon, specific candles or essential oil will be used with intention. Blankets and extra pillows are available to increase comfort and warmth if needed.
The treatment starts with the client lying face up while I perform a preliminary energy scan of your body, I may perform this scan twice if needed. After the initial scan, I begin placing my hands over strategic body positions designed to direct the flow of energy to the chakras and associated organs and endocrine systems of the body. During the session, as I work through the chakras and specific areas of the body, I am often intuitively guided to any areas that require extra attention, where there may be blockages caused by injury, pain or unbalance. I will work on the
the area until I feel a release (which the clients often also feel) or until intuitively I believe it's time to move on from that part.
A treatment lasts from one hour to one and a half hours in length, depending on the appointment type or client need. The treatment space is arranged to promote a feeling of relaxation and peace. I do not tend to speak during a session, to allow the clients to focus on themselves, going deep within, releasing any daily stress and tension.
Falling asleep or entering a deep meditative state of mind, is a normal response to receiving Reiki. Reiki helps calm the nervous system, allowing the client to rest deeply and the body to go into restorative mode.
After the session, it's common for clients to experience a deep sense of peace and relaxation followed by a feeling of being energized and having more clarity.
In a Nutshell
All a Reiki practitioner needs are their hands, knowing one is like having a "first aid kit" right at your fingertips! It's a supportive training aid, a tool that can be used anytime, any place for on-the-spot stress relief, pain relief and to boost energy levels. It's an excellent aid for sports injuries.
The intense relaxation reached during a Reiki treatment, along with the heat often experienced, help to soothe and have a deeply restorative effect on the targeted areas, resulting in a faster recovery rate. With regular treatments, this may even help to reduce further injury.
Athletes! Let the healing energy of Reiki under your skin & see what happens...what do you have to lose? (yes, pun intended).
